I especially loved how the seven stories were told backwards starting in 2073, and working backwards to thousands of years before, as there was- for example- two bodies found by archaeologists in the 2011 part, then it revealed who the bodies were and how they got there a few stories later. Marcus Sedgwick has written this brilliantly, and the connections between the different lives were spooky and clever. I’ve read this book before- just before it was released in 2011- but decided to re-read and re-review it as it has just been shortlisted for the Carnegie book award! It was as brilliant and as haunting as I remembered it. Midwinterblood is a chilling tale told in seven riveting parts, one for each life and based around the times of seven different moons. In fact, Eric and Merle have lived seven past lives, and in each one they have loved each other, whether they’re wife and husband or mother and child. As soon as Eric, avid newspaper journalist, sees the beautiful Merle for the first time, he is certain that they have met before in past lives… and he is right. What would you sacrifice for someone you’ve loved forever?Įric and Merle meet each-other on the strange, childless island of Blessed in 2073. By Marcus Sedgwick, published by Indigo (Orion).

I have been a bit of a fangirl of Libba Bray’s writing ever since I got my hands on her Gemma Doyle series(a trilogy focused on a group of friends who dabble in magic and live in an all-girls boarding school in Victorian times, to put it in an absurd simplicity). And unknown to all, something dark and evil has awakened. A student named Jericho hides a shocking secret. A chorus girl named Theta is running from her past. A young man named Memphis is caught between two worlds. But when the police find a murdered girl branded with a cryptic symbol and Will is called to the scene, Evie realizes her gift could help catch a serial killerĪs Evie jumps headlong into a dance with a murderer, other stories unfold in the city that never sleeps. The only catch is that she has to live with her uncle Will and his unhealthy obsession with the occult.Įvie worries he’ll discover her darkest secret: a supernatural power that has only brought her trouble so far. It’s 1926, and New York is filled with speakeasies, Ziegfield girl, and rakish pickpockets. Evie O’Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City – and she is pos-i-tute-ly ecstatic. An Iron Fey Valentine (#4.Ash’s Letter to Meghan (#3.6 – free on author’s website).Summer’s Crossing (The Iron Fey) (#3.5 – a novella that takes place between The Iron Queen and The Iron Knight).Winter’s Passage (The Iron Fey) (#1.5 – the novella that takes place between The Iron King and The Iron Daughter). The First Kiss (free short story #1.25 – Ash’s POV).Now Meghan will learn just how far she’ll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face…and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart. When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she’s known is about to change.īut she could never have guessed the truth-that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Meghan Chase thought her time with the fey was over, that the sacrifices she had to make were done. She has never quite fit in at school…or at home. A storm is approaching, an army of Iron fey that will drag me into the core of a conflict so powerful, I’m not sure anyone can survive it. Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan’s life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. Meghan Chase has a secret destiny-one she could never have imagined…
The issue doesn’t waste time and quickly lets the reader know that Prince Maresh has not one but two goals he wants to accomplish. The Steel Prince #1’s pacing is exceptional and moves at a brisk pace by establishing Prince Maresh and his current standing as a royal figure. This is a tale told by the original author who wanted to give readers a look at Maxim in his early years, to give us a glimpse of who he was and who he would become. The Steel Prince #1 is a mini-series that follows a well-known character.Įnter Maxim Maresh, the adopted father of Kell in the Shades of Magic series, who is seen as a villain. Schwab in her Shades of Magic book trilogy. Each realm is divided into four realms which govern the same portion on London but on different planes of existence. Another would rather cease all contact altogether and live in solitude. One world filled with magicians took it upon themselves to seal the corrupted world in order to protect the other three. Corruption has spread among one of the four realms. The coincidences made me groan there’s a lot of backstory in the beginning, and inconsistencies abound, but none of this detracts from the vivacious characters and involving plot. Written in the style of Jane Austen, this is a continuation of characters began in Pride and Prejudice: Alethea is the daughter of Mr. Titus immediately sees through Alethea’s charade, and against his better judgment, becomes involved in her plight as the unscrupulous Napier chases her across the continent. Titus is determined to retrieve this painting before an agent steals it for his benefactor, King George IV. On the rough journey through the Alps, Alethea crosses paths with Titus Manningtree, who is searching for a Titian painting bought by his father before the Napoleonic Wars. Dressed as men, the two women head for Venice, where Alethea is certain her older sister will offer sanctuary. To escape her husband’s brutality, young Alethea Darcy Napier slips out a window, and with her stalwart maid, flees England. The Exploits and Adventures of Miss Alethea Darcy Junji Ito blends different styles of horror together, often combing them with other genres.īody horror is what he’s most known for. This is handy for anyone who wants to start reading Junji Ito’s works or wants to track down a specific short story. It lists all his works available in English and gives a brief overview. This guide acts as a basic introduction to the horror master. If not, you’re simultaneously in for a shock and a treat. If you’re familiar with his name, then you’ve probably seen some of his art online and know what I’m talking about. While many horror creators are coming out of Japan, Junji Ito has risen to the top due to his imaginative scenarios and over-the-top imagery. Since 1987, he’s been disturbing readers with short and long-form stories that blend several subgenres, such as psychological and body horror. You can’t talk about horror manga without mentioning Junji Ito. What we first notice about Newbury is that he - like Sherlock Holmes - is a thorough man, meticulous in his detection as is Miss Hobbes a meticulous woman, whom he has high regard for, and more so than most women of that era would have got from their superiors. By order of Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, they are sent to investigate a crash site in Finsbury Park. Newbury and his assistant Miss Hobbes have to investigate the policemen strangler killings and a series of assaults by what are known as Revenants, or zombified humans on the prowl. Newbury is a rational man who doesn't believe in séances or tarot readings but finds rational explanations for what evidence he has, which for him is becoming a bit of a headache. With so much change happening in the city during Victorian times, this has become the era of new technology, clockwork automatons and airships lead the way, but Newbury still has to think hard on the evidence he is presented with. A glowing policeman has been seen at night, with several people murdered in the London area. Sir Maurice Newbury is in the midst of a problem with one of his current cases, and is trying to make sense of what he would normally see as nothing more than simple hocus-pocus. Steampunk is at the heart of this first novel from the man who penned the Ghost series of novels and audio scripts for BBC's Doctor Who and Sherlock Holmes. The Box, Culver City, California, USA 12.
